Promising debut from local musicians

New music is something that can slip into one of three categories: horrific, listenable or iPod worthy. Bottled By Fools is a three-piece acoustic, folk-like band from Pottstown, PA, which is certainly iPod worthy. Created in 2004, Bottled By Fools began as a couple words jotted down on a notepad with a few accompanying guitar riffs that sounded nice to friendly ears.

‘Planet Terror’ starts off ‘Grindhouse’ double feature

Two of America's most esteemed directors, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, have come together to create a movie that gives praise to '70s double features that once ruled crummy theaters. Both films, "Planet Terror" and "Death Proof," offer up a bit of nostalgia for old-timers, and they give the present generation a taste of how things used to be.

$$ Stuck in the cycle with no time to save $$

Four years cone and gone. I'll tell you what; I feel like an old man. I can remember having college success seminar thinking that this is never going to end and it is going to be great. Well, I assure you my fellow Cabrinians, it ends, and when it does, it feels like a ton of bricks.

Modest Mouse ‘sinks’ to new heights

Fresh off a three-year break and a brief touring stint late last year, Modest Mouse is back with their new album, "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank." On their fifth outing, MM gets some help from legendary Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. What began as a couple of jam sessions between Marr and MM's vocalist and lead guitarist Isaac Brock turned into a full-length album and a tour.

Throw Shady Dog a bone

The crackling of the needle on the record is the first thing that Dave Castleman hears when he starts his day. Before he even begins with the day's paper work, Dave picks out which album he wants to start with. It is always a difficult choice considering his selection, which contains but is not limited to: classical, jazz, folk, country, blues, rock & roll, R&B, opera and reggae.

And the Oscar goes to …

The 79th annual Academy Awards was a night full of first timers. Ellen Degeneres hosted for her first time, and she did a decent job holding her ground among past greats. Her jokes weren't as potent and lasting as Billy Crystal's nor were they as offensive as Chris Rock's, but they certainly got the job done.

Songs gone wrong

Blur - "Song 2" Don't get me wrong, I really like this song, but I mean come on. "I got my head checked by a jumbo jet." It seems like Damon Albarn fell asleep at the wheel, hit a pole, woke up and decided to write a quick song on the way to the hospital.

Indie rockers implore you to ‘Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah hit it big in 2005 with their self-released, self-titled debut album. They were named "Hot New Band" in 2005 by Rolling Stone; they had David Bowie and The Talking Heads' David Byrne showing up at their shows, yet they received little to no airplay and no marketing techniques employed by any label.

RHCP burns up the stage

After a very colorful and distorted Mars Volta got off of the stage, the night began. It started out as a face off between bassist Michael Balzary a.k.a. Flea and guitarist John Frusciante. There were no flashing lights, no backup dancers, no special effects; just the bass and guitar.

Elections quickly approaching

"Lynn Swann: either no ideas or bad ideas." This is just one of the strongly negative slogans you have heard and will continue to hear over the next couple of weeks until the elections on Nov. 7 roll around. On that first Tuesday of the month, voters from around the nation will rush to a voting booth to do their part in trying to change this country one vote at a time.

Movie Review: “The Departed”

"Goodfellas," "Casino," "Raging Bull," "Taxi Driver" and "Cape Fear" lend just a glimpse at the dent that Martin Scorsese has left on the movie world. The list could very well go on, but as I talk about his already swollen resume he has struck again with a new masterpiece.

Pro wrestling takes Cabrini to the extreme

Ever hear of the brainbuster, or how about the cobra clutch, or even the reverse Russian leg sweep? Last Friday night, the Dixon Center was filled with just that as the wrestlers from Pro Wrestling Unplugged came to do some damage. The event, sponsored by WYBF The Burn, the campus' radio station, brought 20 wrestlers to the stage led by champ Trent Acid.

High textbook prices mean deep pockets

As it is widely known, textbook prices are a reoccurring burden to any college student. Each semester, students come sulking back to the bookstore to see how far they can dig themselves into debt. If they're lucky the damage will be under $300; if they're lucky.

Men speak out about dangers of ‘manorexia’

Recently, women who have complexes about their physical form found they are not alone. More and more men these days are admitting to being anorexic. They are no longer referred to as being anorexic, but "manorexic," which is the name given to the newest twist on anorexia.

War on censorship

Since president Andrew Jackson, no other leader of America has been censured besides George W. Bush. Democratic Senator Russ Feingold announced that Monday, March 13, 2006, he will call for a rare presidential censure over Bush's domestic wiretapping program.

Gifts to please

Sick and tired of the old, mundane Christmas presents that are given to you year after year by your grandparents? Well my friends, there are gifts that are at the opposite end of the spectrum than those dreaded Christmas ties or the all too embarrassing snowflake sweater.

‘Terminator’ pilot planned

C2 Pictures which produced "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" will be teaming up with Warner Bros. TV to produce a new TV series tentatively called "The Sarah Connor Chronicles." This show will follow Sarah Connor and her 14-year-old son, John, as they are on the run from the machines.
