Cabrini students work alongside Mayan people in Guatemala

To submerge themselves within the Mayan culture, motivated Cabrini students to travel to Guatemala. Their assumption that the trip would focus on touring the surrounding area, however, was incorrect. "I didn't know I signed up to carry boulders," Michelle Costa, sophomore communication major, said, with humor in her voice.

Porada candidate for provost vice president

Strategic planning along with diversity are two key areas of accomplishment for vice president provost candidate Dr. Kenneth J. Porada. Specifically, Porada has implemented new academic programs that have helped identify new areas of identity for his university.

Cabrini final exams to begin on Dec. 7 Cabrini's final exams will take place the week of Dec. 7 to 11. A full schedule is posted online at www.cabrini.edu/Finals. Monday, Dec. 7 will also be the last day that students can declare Pass/Fail. For more information students should contact the Registrar.

Cabrini Day speaker evaluates consumerism

We should not let illusions manipulate our views on life. When we do, it negatively impacts our well-being and general happiness. This was the main argument of this year's Cabrini Day keynote speaker. "There is this illusion that happiness comes from stuff," Andrew Abela, associate professor marketing and chair-elect of the Department of Business and Economics at the Catholic University of America, said.

Mansion recognized in national register

The Cabrini College Mansion has served as the iconic representation of the College for 50 years. Its distinct architectural design has been recognized not only for the College itself, but also for the nation. Recently, the Woodcrest Estate Mansion was named to the National Register of Historic Places, which includes the nation's most famous buildings.

15 million Americans are unemployed to date

A House-passed bill could provide additional unemployment compensation and extend benefits by 13 weeks. The bill is now pending in the Senate and causing debate. The Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009 was drafted with the intent of providing relief to the 15 million jobless Americans.

Community members honor Dr. King through volunteering

Nineteen members of the Cabrini community honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday on Monday, Jan. 17, by volunteering at the Norristown Police Athletic League. Among the 19 volunteers were 14 students. Faculty, staff and alumni also participated. For one student volunteer, serving the community commemorated the ideals of a historical figure.

Through collaborative efforts, integration of resources and sharing ideas, Philadelphia and suburbs can ensure its goal of increasing its surrounding environment's sustainability. Education of the city's youth and teaching smart environmental practices within school curriculums, however, are vital.

Swimming earns 17 gold medals in split

The Cabrini men's and women's swimming teams collectively earned 17 gold medals during a Lebanon Valley College hosted dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 15. While the women's team swept a 109-94 victory against the Lebanon Valley Dutch women, the men suffered a 78-124 defeat.

Seasons end in championship losses

Cabrini College's field hockey team suffered a 3-0 defeat Saturday, Nov. 8, losing the Colonial States Athletic Conference title to Neumann College, at the Edith Robb Dixon Field. Proceeding the game, the team received a plaque honoring their placement of second within the CSAC.

Lawler leads the way for successful fall

Despite junior Chris Lawler's individual successes, which includes his ranking at the No. 1 position and serving as a continual low-scorer, he regards the Cabrini golf team as the most valuable aspect of his playing career. Lawler recently shot a match-best round, a one over 73, which secured a victory over CSAC rivals Immaculata University.

Cavs slip past Marywood on home turf

The Cabrini men's soccer team defeated Marywood University with a 4 to 3 victory in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game Saturday, Oct. 25. Their win at the Edith Robb Dixon Field secured an unbeaten status and advancement within the CSAC. "They are hitting their peak for the playoffs," Eric Burke, Cabrini Alum '93, said of the team's achievement.

Faculty grant to spur research on connection of historical radicals

Connective research, involving radical Catholicism, has encouraged a Cabrini religious studies professor to explore beyond the college's implemented curriculum. Dr. Nicholas Rademacher, assistant professor of religion, is one of 11-selected faculty members who received a Cabrini Faculty Grant to further research projects.

Students learn ‘The Truth about Suicide’

"In America, for every three murders there are five suicides," were the words projected on the screen in the Iadarola Center's lecture hall on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Twenty-one Cabrini students gathered for Active Mind's presentation of the film "The Truth about Suicide: Real Stories of Depression in College.

Vice president of academic affairs to retire at year’s end

At the fall semester opening convocation, Cabrini College President Dr. Marie George announced that Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Jonnie Guerra would retire at the close of the 2008-2009 academic year. "I'm not retiring from Cabrini, I'm retiring from academic administration," Guerra later said.
