To study or not to study, that is the question

Students’ first few years of college are experimental.  Whether that be with relationships, eating-habits or even academics, students use their first few years to discover ways to become their own person. However, is studying the same way in college the same as studying in high school?

In college, to keep up with the demand and deadlines of classes, some type of system is needed.

Sophomore, Mike Cinicolo, has a study system which seems to work out pretty well for him.

“I would definitely say that I’ve been studying more. I put a little more work into my studies,” Cinicolo said. “I usually like to come to the library.”

Mike said that he has made a conscious effort to increase his study habits by going to Holy Spirit Library to finish assignments.

“It’s isolated, it’s quiet and I just get it done easier,” Cinicolo said.

He doesn’t like any loud noises or distractions and is usually in the library for about one to two hours.

Taylor Bookman, sophomore criminology major and field hockey goalie, has a completely opposite view than Cinicolo. When asked if she was someone who used to slack off in High School she had to agree. She says that her study habits haven’t changed since coming to college.

“I kind of like to procrastinate and wait until the last minute, like as in two days before things are due,” Bookman said.

Junior business major and athlete, Mohammed Konneh, has changed his study habits significantly from high school to college.

“I had to get used to planning out my weeks, deciding when to do homework and when to hangout with my friends,” Konneh said.

As an athlete Konneh has to balance both roles.

“I basically base everything around my sports schedule,” Konneh said. “I still do not really have it under control because of his different classes but he can handle it better now.”

Between playing soccer and being a full-time student it is all about having a schedule and knowing when you need to get things done.

With the night classes, more work, abundance of essays and time with friends, making some sort of schedule is important to keep order. Try getting into a rhythm of studying when students first get assignments and the semester should go smoothly.
