The women’s soccer team took the field against Notre Dame of Maryland University on Tuesday, Oct. 16. With 99 career wins under Coach Ken Prothero’s belt, the Lady Cavaliers were in no way going to let this win slip away from them.

“We came into it as confident as every other game we play,” said Prothero “It was another conference game and we just need to take them one at a time.”

Early on in the game, freshman Dana Peterson found the rebound off of sophomore Melissa Scanzano’s initial shot, soaring the ball into the net.

The Cavaliers held this 1-0 lead into halftime and would dominate possession in the next half.

“The stats don’t lie, neither does the girls’ play,” Prothero said. “If you watched the game or looked at the stats, it was clear that we were the better team today. The win was well-earned and I’m proud of my girls.”

The game was intense. The Cavaliers kept the ball in their offensive end for the majority of the game and released shot after shot toward the goal being so close but narrowly missing the cage.

With less than fifteen minutes left in the game, senior Dana Drake rocketed the second Cabrini goal past the keeper with the help of an assist from junior Lauren Pallister. This second goal gave the girls the second wind they needed in order to finish out the game as strong as they had started it.

Scanzano had the highest number of shots on goal that night with six and Kristina Startare came in second with four shots for the night.

Cabrini’s keeper, senior Maddy Edwards, grabbed her fourth shutout for the season and her 22nd for her college career.

As the final whistle sounded, a few girls took the liberty of pouring the Gatorade jug of water over Prothero’s head in celebration of the huge win. Then, when all the were back on the sideline, the team, assistant coaches and Prothero’s daughter slipped on blue shirts that read “100” across the front.

“It feels great to have 100 wins under my belt here at Cabrini,” Prothero said, “but it wasn’t without help from so many others that this was at all possible.

“This achievement belongs to me as much as it does all of the girls who I’ve coached, my assistants, my family and our fans. This program has achieved so much over the past decade I’m just as excited about this win as I am for what the future holds for us.”

The women’s soccer team racked up another one in the win column for their CSAC stats, bringing them to 4-1-3. Overall, they are now at 5-6-3.

The Lady Cavs continue their push for the playoffs on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they travel to face Cairn University at 12 p.m. The Lady Cavs next home game is Tuesday, Oct. 23, against Centenary College at 6:30 p.m.
