It may only be the first semester of the school year, but seniors are already starting to think about what they are going to do after graduation.
For seniors, graduation is either the most exciting or scariest time of their life. They have to start making a plan for what they intend to do about a job and their living situation after graduation.
For some, living on their own after graduation will not be a new thing. But for others, living away from home and having to afford monthly payments may be a little overwhelming.
Living at school and away from home may be a good way to start to learn how to be independent and not relying on parents quite as much.
While living at school, students are learning how to do their own laundry, make their own food and in some cases learn how to make an affordable budget, all of which are important aspects of living alone.
Some seniors are working during the school year and starting to save up money so that they are able to move away from home.
“Currently I am saving up money from working and hopefully a year out I will get a good career that will allow me to live by myself,” Sam McAnich, senior criminology major, said.
Although most seniors will move back home with their parents to save up money for their own place, some will move out right after graduation with roommates, most of which are friends from college.
“I haven’t lived at home since junior year of college,” Nick Jacques, art teacher and 2003 graduate of University of Hartford, said. “Right after college I moved in with a friend.”
Those students who are planning to live at home do not have a set time frame for when they hope to move out, but plan to live with their parents until they are able to keep a steady job and make enough money to pay for themselves and their bills.
“I hope to live at home for three years until I have enough money,” Sean Tallon, senior English major, said.
Even though some seniors have a set plan, others are still not sure what their living situation might be come graduation day in May. It all depends on their career and job situation.
