The lacrosse season was kicked off over the weekend with both men’s and women’s teams in action. Though the men’s team enjoyed a home opener, the women got to experience something not many division three student-athletes get to experience in there time at college; traveling as a team to another state.
The team set out for Santa Barbara, California for a game against Colorado College at a neutral site. “It was shocking when we first heard the news of where we were going,” said Junior midfielder Sarah Carzo, “but we were all excited to go and see if we could get the win against a very unfamiliar team.”
As the snow still fell in Pennsylvania, the girls game got under way in sunny Santa Barbara. Colorado College opened the game with a goal, but was shortly lived when the lady cavs struck back with two quick goals by Melissa Scanzano and Sarah Carzo. “It was a great feeling,” said Carzo “to put our team ahead, in the setting we were in, was just an awesome feeling.” As the game continued the team lost a little spark and at half time trailed Colorado College by a score of 4-7, but the game exploded in the second half with a total of 22 goals recorded between both teams. Senior Lacie Doubet finished the game with 6 goals, while junior Sarah Carzo tied her career high with 4 goals, as well as senior Melissa Scanzano adding 3 while sophomore Jess Breuning tallied 2.
The game ended with the full-time score of 18-15 going the way of Colorado College. “The team performed well,” said Head Coach Jackie Neary, “we are disappointed that we didn’t get the win, but it was a super opportunity to see the beautiful west coast.” Though the lady cavs did take the loss it seems as though the whole experience was good for the team. “We were really lucky to have such an amazing opportunity to travel with our teammates and coaches,” said Carzo, “we didn’t win, but as a whole it was an unforgettable experience.”
The team returned over the weekend, looking forward to some time to relax, but with their clash with Haverford College approaching the team looks to work hard and bring home the first win of the season.
