Emily Rowan has left her mark at Cabrini University. The photos that she has taken over her four years have circulated far and wide around the campus and beyond. Her work has being published on many front pages of Cabrini’s school newspaper, Loquitur, to having her photos featured in Cabrini’s magazine and on the University’s social media accounts.
Rowan, senior communication major at Cabrini, was one of 15 students chosen to receive the “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges” award. Rowan submitted an application which included a list of accomplishments that she has achieved during her four years at Cabrini and a letter of recommendation from her advisor.
Rowan’s list of accomplishments that helped her in receiving the award range from outstanding work in the communication department to having a 3.93 GPA.
“I was photo editor for the Loquitur for two years. I spent time as a teacher’s assistant in a fine arts photography class, I was inducted into four national honor societies and received the Communication Departmental Award over my four years at Cabrini,” Rowan said.
In high school Rowan was an average student with good grades but she never expected to be a leader and stand out in college.
“Before I came to Cabrini, I never really considered myself a leader. I was more of a quiet person in high school and I was never involved in a lot of clubs or activities,” she said. “When I was asked to be involved in various ways here at Cabrini I started saying yes to those opportunities and it completely changed my life.”
Rowan grew as a student and as a person more than she ever expected to over the past four years.
“Saying yes to the the honors program on campus, taking the position of photo editor for the paper, those were some things that put me outside of my comfort zone, but I am so glad I did that,” Rowan said. “I met so many great people and learned so much about myself by taking risks and trying new things.”
Rowan has also been involved in her fair share of community service which is a large part to receiving this award.
Rowan attended service trips during her freshman year to make crafts and play with children at DuPont hospital in Delaware. She also has a passion for raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. Rowan has spent time attending the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Philadelphia, PA and has written and shared her personal stories about how the disease had an impact on her family’s lives.
The people selected for the Who’s Who award proved to faculty that they are hardworking and determined to do something great in their lives. The board who reviews the applications for the award here at Cabrini noticed that Rowan as well as the 14 other recipients met the required criteria.
At first Rowan did not plan on applying but professor Jerry Zurek encouraged her to do so because the two have worked closely over her years here at Cabrini.
“Receiving the award really means to me that all the hard work I have put in over the last four years has really paid off in the end,” Rowan said. “It is a huge honor.”
According to Whoswhoamongstudents.com, The Who’s Who Award is given out to college students who have met the following criteria; a strong GPA, participation and leadership within school organization and extracurricular activities, community involvement, and future leadership ability and/or potential.
