Dr. Laura Valente has been fired from her position as the vice president for student development. A statement was released Tuesday, May 28, from the office of the president, informing the college community of the termination.
The statement, which was e-mailed to students, staff and faculty, was also posted in offices around campus. It’s subject line simply read, “termination.”
Valente was hired in July 2000 to supervise several offices on campus, including Residence Life, the Dixon Center, athletics, counseling, student activities, diversity initiatives and health services.
Valente’s termination comes on the heels of Nicole Nordberg’s termination. Nordberg was terminated just weeks before Valente, and worked with Valente as an administrative coordinator.
Controversy was no stranger to Valente’s office, as many questioned the quality of the job she was doing. With the recent termination of several RAs, and the housing situation of 2000, many people are happy to see Valente go.
President Antoinette Iadarola’s statement says that the college is searching the nation for a replacement for Valente. Dr. Myrna Grandgenett, the assistant to the President for Mission Integration, will be working with Iadarola, as staffers will now report to them, instead of Valente, in the interim.
David Carpenter was reached for comment, but deferred all questions to Human Resources. No one was available for comment in Human Resources as of Friday afternoon, May 31.
The Loquitur will have more extensive coverage on the termination of Dr. Valente in our first issue back, this September.
