There are six essential nutrients; are you getting them all?
Cabrini has three spots to get food. Cavs Corner in Founder’s Hall offers a one-price buffet‑style restaurant. CRU5H in the Widener Center offers five different dining options along with the small coffee shop called The Bean inside of it. The Cav’s Shack, located in the Nerney Pavillion at the Dixon Center provides a healthier alternative of options on the go.
How healthy is the food at these three locations on campus?
Well for starters, you need six essential nutrients. Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. These nutrients supply the body with the main source of energy. They help the body grow, develop and stay healthy.
“In my opinion, I feel that students are not getting the proper nutrients they need each day,” Angela Rivieccio, a health science major, said. Rivieccio no longer has a meal plan with Cabrini because of dietary restrictions.
“With there only being three places to eat, there are not many options for someone, like me, that has celiac disease,” Rivieccio said. She lives in South Residence Hall and has a kitchen so she makes her own food.
These six essential nutrients all have different jobs to help the body. Minerals help the body grow stronger.
“Everyday options became limited because I cannot have gluten, which includes fried foods or sandwiches,” Rivieccio said. It’s difficult for students who are also athletes.
“It’s hard to eat healthy on this campus with such limited healthy options,” Kelley Sweeney, a Cabrini athlete, said. Sweeney is a sophomore who plays two sports here at Cabrini, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.
Also, your body cannot make vitamins so we have to obtain them from your diet. Like vitamin A, D and C along with B vitamins.
“At Cavs Corner, the only thing you can get that is healthy is from the salad bar or the mindful station,” Sweeney said. With limited options it hard for not just athletes but all students trying to eat and stay healthy.
“CRU5H and Cav Shack have pre-packaged foods like salads and I don’t know how healthy that is compared to freshly made salads,” Sweeney said. It is true that pre-packaged salads are not as healthy than fresh ingredients.
