Having an internship is a good way to get more experience for your future career. Internships are great for gaining more experience in your preferred career.  You can get paid and unpaid internships for college credit.  When students have an unpaid internship that is just for college credit, students have to learn how to budget their money and time.  If the internships are during the school year, classes are scheduled and time can become tighter

When looking for an internship students will need to look at how far away the place is from their school. Students also need to figure out how they are getting to and from the internship and school. Students can drive if they have their own vehicle. Some might be able to take the train or other public transportations. If their is no income coming in to pay for the gas or the tickets each way students may want to look for a part time job.

Kareem Callisto, assistant director of  center career and professional development, said “Depending on the location, students can take the Cabrini College shuttle. If the shuttle is not an option, I have known students to take a part time job that allows them to budget for transportation, food, etc. ”

Alexis Schwartz, a sophomore marketing major and leadership minor, said “My internship currently is on campus so it doesn’t cost anything extra.”

Having a job that doesn’t pay can be hard on living expenses especially during the school year. Students will have to learn how to budget their money. Some might have to get a job to help cover the costs that cannot be met like food, gas, and other necessary items.

Callisto said, ” In regards to time, time management is key. As a student, you really have to be conscientious of the time put towards your internship and your school responsibilities. Find the method that works best for you. Some students try to schedule classes on certain days, leaving the empty days as dedicated internship time.”

Time management can be hard if students do not properly spend their time.  Internships are great for resumes. If money is not involved are internships really that appealing? Yes, experience is a main key for many people. Even though an internship might not be paid, it provides many with the opportunity to gain experience in a student’s field.

Schwartz said,” Time wise, I planned my schedule ahead of time so that I have the center of my day filled to be able to go to my internship and split it up between a few days.”

“The internship is appealing because I’m getting experience I can apply when outside of campus getting an internship.”

Students who want to receive credit for an internship must complete an application in the Center for Career and Professional Development.

Callisto said, “Students can receive between two and six credits, depending on the number of hours worked.”

Many students are looking for internships to help in finding a job in the near future. If the internship does not help them out for a job they gain skills that will help them as well. It is a win-win opportunity.

Swartz said, “I can’t get a job from this specific internship but the skills I get will be great for an event planning internship.”

Callisto said, “This is one of those questions where the most logical answer is, “it depends.” It truly depends on the company. There have been a number of students who interned at an institution or a company for free and were offered full-time paid opportunities upon graduation.”
