On Feb. 8, Cabrini University announced that it would be changing the location of the Student Government Association’s office. The office, formerly in the Rooymans Activity Center has been moved to Cabrini’s Apartment Complex’s (CAC) second-floor conference room.
This location shift coincides with others on Cabrini’s campus to start the spring 2017 semester. One of the moves was the RAC Grille, which was also formerly in the Rooymans Activity Center. The school is also in the process of moving their public safety office to the RAC building and will take the SGA’s former office.
“To help with traffic patterns on campus, the Office of Public Safety will move to the Rooymans Activity Center by the end of the academic year. The Student Government Association office—previously located in the Rooymans Activity Center—has relocated to the Cabrini Apartment Complex (CAC), Second Floor Lounge,” the official announcement read via an email that was sent to all Cabrini students and faculty.
The change was a sudden one, but not a shock to anyone.
“We got that email just like you guys did,” SGA President, Erin Kelly, told Loquitur. “Our old executive board office was in the RAC and the RAC had closed so they pretty much had to look for open spots on campus.”
Kelly and the rest of the Student Government officers didn’t have anything to do with the moving process. “We were contacted by Student Life and asked to move to open that space for other offices on campus, and we were offered space in the CAC,” Anne Filippone, adviser of the SGA, said.
“Being switched to an office in the apartment complex is definitely a little nicer because we can see students a little bit more than we did in the RAC and it gets our name out there more,” Stefanie Barkofski, the SGA’s public relations officer, told Loquitur.
This is both a blessing and a curse, though. “The office itself is not easily accessible by students unless they live in West or the CAC so I think that presents a challenge for them,” Filippone said. “They have discussed the importance of being more visible in other parts of campus (SEaL, Cavs Corner, Founder’s Lobby, etc.) as well as online, so students know who they are and can easily contact them regarding any issues they would like SGA to consider.”
Their new office gives the SGA’s executive board the opportunity to schedule individual meetings with their peers to discuss issues on campus and possible solutions to solve them.
On Tuesday, Feb. 21, the Student Government Association had their first meeting in their new office. The executive board of six including President Kelly, Vice President Salvatore Ardizzone, Secretary Kaylee Plisinksi, Treasurer Ben Roda, Parliamentarian Jack Sanders and Public Relations Officer Barkofski meet every other Tuesday from 3:15-4:30 to discuss concerns around campus and what the agenda for the next meeting will be.
On the Tuesdays where SGA’s execs don’t have their meeting in their new office, they meet in Founders Hall room 351 with their class representatives and anybody else in the student body who is interested in an open meeting. These meetings will remain in the 3:15-4:30 timeslot they have been in throughout the school year.
Although SGA is changing their room, they are not changing how much they listen to the students of Cabrini University.
