A suicide prevention awareness event was an event held by the counseling and Psychological Services. Many students here on campus attend the event and were also able to provide a lot of valuable feedback. Sociology and Criminology major Eric Howard, said, “the suicide prevention event was an eye opener. They discussed different ways how to prevent suicide, how others can be a huge help, how counseling can be a big support, and simply talking to positive people can help change your decision as well.”

This event was used to inform students on how to resolve suicidal situations. Students are not the only individuals to find these tips useful because this information is valuable for anyone dealing with negative emotions. The discussion touched base on expressing thoughts and how to end those pertaining to suicide. Counseling, Psychological Services, and Active Minds work together to come up with ideas that will allow students to become comfortable with sharing each of their stories.

“Suicide awareness is essential,” Digital Communications major, Anesia Meredith, said. “People should be informed about the issue.”

According to emorycaresforyou.emory.edu, “The rate of suicide is between .5 and 7.5 per 100,000 among college students. There are more than 1,000 suicides on college campuses per year. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people aged 25 to 34 and the third-leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24.”

“The suicide prevention event was very beneficial. It touched on aspects such as how people can overcome these obstacles and also receive help,” digital communications major, Siani Anderson, said. “It is good how the discussion also promotes trust. The environment was based on students coming together to face and confront their problems.”

The importance of the awareness is so others are able to understand the seriousness of the situation. Suicidal thoughts require immediate attention. It is important to be aware of the severity of the issue also. Early stages may be signs of depression. First things first, positive advice and counseling is recommended. Everyone has their own reasons for how they deal with difficult situa- tions. Stress and depression can cause someone to want to end their life. The point of Suicide Prevention Awareness is for unity among those who share the same issues. Resolutions are key. Helping one another is a part of solving the problem.
