Philly Freedom: Favorite Festivities

“Brotherly Love,” “Philadelphia Freedom” and “Spirit of Philadelphia” are themes and phrases that are heard and spread throughout the city. In Philadelphia, there is unity, history, heritage, and plenty of things to do.

Whether you are going on a first date, planning a girls’ night out or feel like getting the heck off campus, just keep in mind that Philadelphia is a happening city with oodles and oodles of things to do.

First there is the Historic District in Olde City. You can go to the Betsy Ross House, go to the Constitution Center and the Liberty Bell. Also down that end of town is South Street.

South Street is a hopping spot for young adults especially with all the night clubs and bars like Fat Tuesday’s and Bridget Foy’s. If clubs are what you are into, book it down to Delaware Avenue to hit up Shampoo and Chrome night clubs.

For the “sports lover” in the crowd, take a stroll over to Dave and Busters, Chickie and Pete’s (the original), or the new Tony Luke’s. But you definitely can not leave South Philly without a world-famous cheese steak. Whether it’s Pat’s or Geno’s, that is your prerogative, but just make sure you order the right way or you’ll be in big trouble.

Now for the fancy stuff. Guys, listen up! If you’re trying to romance your woman, here’s the key to her heart: take her to Walnut Street to see a musical or a play. Some of the newest Broadway hits will be stopping through town, like Aida or Wicked. Now, if you really want to impress her, do not waste anymore time. Go on down across town to Ritten House Square and make reservations at one of the fabulous, mouth-watering steak houses.

Want a great meal for less but still has great atmosphere? Cosi is the best. Sit inside or outside, spending no more than $12 per person while eating a wonderful sandwich melted on pita bread, then roasting marshmallows for homemade s’mores for dessert. If that doesn’t sound appealing, I don’t know what to tell you.

The key to enjoying Philadelphia and the key to find something you like: pick a theme and roll with it. Another key: wear comfy shoes because you are going to be doing a lot of walking.
