Mace believes more students are coming forward because more students are outraged about racial incidents. They are now reporting these situations instead of transferring or hiding what happened to them.
"I can be your best friend or your worst enemy. I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen," Jena district attorney Reed Walters said, according to freethejena6.org.
In September 2006, a chain of events happened at Jena, La. leaving a small town of 3,000 in racial tension.
On Wednesday, April 4, Don Imus, radio show host of the nationally syndicated show "Imus in the Morning," referred to the Rutgers' women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos" a day after the team lost the national championship to Tennessee.
"Unless they've given 'ho' a whole new definition, that's not what I am," Kia Vaughn, Rutgers' sophomore center told reporters.
No students stepped forward to take the blame for committing a string of derogatory racial acts in Xavier Hall after senior college administrators called upon students to admit to their actions in a meeting with Xavier students.
