Sister Ursula Infante is a common name known around campus. Many people also know her as the first president and founder of Cabrini. She was a member of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the group that started to think about the idea of opening a college.
With the hard work and dedication Mother Ursula took charge in opening a school with the other sisters. When Cabrini College opened, a student body was all the college needed for a jump-start to become well-known today. Before opening a college, Sister Ursula was the principal of Mother Cabrini High School in New York. She was very involved with the high school as well as with the college.
Mother Ursula was known for helping students and guiding them along their way during their journey in school. She was heavily involved with the college and served until 1967— 10 years of serving as the first president. With raising the enrollment of the student body from 42 to 420 students, Mother Ursula is a name on campus today that is never forgotten.
In honor of Mother Ursula, who passed away in 2001, Cabrini offers an award to a senior about to graduate and recognizes their accomplishments of being involved around campus. This award is given to someone who is seen to achieve the ideals of academic and extracurricular achievement within the college. Votes were made during commencement kick-off and staff, faculty and students were able to vote for a winner.
At the end of voting, 10 nominees were able to have a chance to win this prestigious award. The winner of this year award will be named at the class dinner for the seniors but will receive their prize in front of family and friends during the 2015 commencement in May. The winner of the Mother Ursula award will be given a plaque with their name on it and $500.
Upcoming seniors still have the chance to approach the criteria for this award, mainly by becoming involved around campus and showing the judges why the deserve this award.
The award is given by the academic affairs office and announces the winner at the senior dinner. Winners have the opportunity to hold this honorable award and present in commencement the next year.
“It gives me something to look forward to when I am a senior. Being involved around campus, I would hope to be nominated my senior year,” Brian Quirk, undecided major, said.
With commencement coming up, this award is up for grabs for any senior and it will make the seniors reflect on all that they have done and have their work pay off with the Mother Ursula award.
