Frustrated while trying to do research off campus? Finding that some of the free information on the Internet will not pass muster with your professor? Wishing that you could have access to the Library’s growing list of propriety databases from home?

Well, Cabrinians, your wish has been fulfilled. On Monday, Feb. 18, the staff of Holy Spirit Library celebrated their newest service: off campus access to Library databases. A ribbon cutting ceremony and refreshments accompanied the formal introduction of this new service.

“Access from Anywhere” is the slogan the Library is using to publicize this new service, since you can literally access Library databases from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a Cabrini Domain Account.

Accessing databases off-campus is similar to accessing them on-campus, with the one difference. After selecting the database you want to search (from http://www.cabrini.edu/Library/db.aps), you will be prompted to enter your Cabrini Domain username and password. Add that information and the database you selected will be ready to search.

The software that enables the Library to offer this service is called EZ-Proxy. And it is easy! EZ-Proxy does not require that your browser be configured in any special way to use Library resources from outside the Cabrini College computer network. The only prerequisite to using EZ-Proxy is that your browser accept cookies. The EZ-Proxy cookie is not used to track your use, but only to let you keep your connection as you move from one database to another. This cookie will disappear when you exit your browser.

The Library staff is excited about being able to offer this new service and is grateful to the Information Technology and Resources staff for making it happen.

The one caveat that the Library staff has is that Academic Universe/Lexis-Nexis is currently not available through EZ-Proxy software. ITR is working to solve this problem.
