The Cabrini field hockey team has solidified their place in the CSAC Finals. After working hard all season, the Lady Cavs were able to show how hard work pays off with an impressive 5-0 win over Keystone College on Thursday, Nov. 1.

Keystone College came into the game tonight hoping for a victory but was stopped well short of that by the Lady Cavs. Throughout the game it was obvious that the Lady Cavs were not going to be denied of a spot in the championship game.

“I think we practiced really hard and we knew what was coming,” Rachel Antuzzi said.

The hard work was evident throughout the game as the Cabrini Lady Cavs field hockey team muscled their way to victory. At times it seemed like the Keystone Giants were timid and scared to fight for loose balls. Be that as it may, the Lady Cavs were all over the field making any and every play possible.

With the game following Halloween, you would hope as a fan that the Lady Cavs didn’t spend too much time trick-or-treating. However, this game followed an even more important event: Hurricane Sandy. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday but postponed a day due to the hurricane.

“With the hurricane coming in we knew that we weren’t going to be able to practice, so yesterday we came out and went over a few things,” Lindsey Atzert said.

It was a bright spot and an inspiring win in such a devastating time.

The Lady Cavs were led by Atzert. She opened the scoring with a goal just 59 seconds into the game. After the Lady Cavs scored their first goal of the night they never looked back.

Atzert added goals in the 17th, 37th and 44th minutes for a four-goal game. She also assisted on the Lady Cavs only other goal, a tally by Karlie Gruccio in the 57th minute.

It wasn’t only the offense who came to play. The defense played strong which allowed the offense to take control of the game.

“Defense is a big strength,” Samantha LaMaina said. “I think Lindsey [Atzert] is one of our main scorers and she always knows where to put the ball to get it in the net.”

Although it may have seemed that Atzert was on her own tonight but she had a very good supporting cast helping her to lead the Lady Cavs to victory.

With the win the Lady Cavs field hockey team’s next game will have a lot at stake. A trip to the NCAA Tournament is on the line when the team travels to face Gwynedd-Mercy College in the CSAC Final on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. The Lady Cavs feel they have earned the opportunity to play in the title game.

“I think it was us knowing this could be our last game of the season,” Atzert said. “The upperclassman didn’t want that to happen.”
