With spring just beginning, sports fans have something to look forward to again, baseball season! The cold long months of winter and lack of a major outdoor sports season are over and we are approaching the season of hot dogs, ballparks, baseball caps and farmers tan lines.
But, for the sports fans who wish for the season of warm layers, hot chocolate, snow and football stadiums, is baseball season still a drag for them? For some Cabrini students, the battle between MLB (Major league baseball) season and NFL (national football league) season really tears some people apart.
Junior Maureen Helm says, “ I like MLB season more because the weather starts to get a lot nicer and I feel like more people understand baseball so there is always more people around wanting to go to the phillies game.”
Classmate Tim Attalah agrees saying, “I’d say I like baseball season more because there are more games to watch all the time and because it is one of my favorite sports to play.”
Baseball is America’s pastime. Movies such as League of Their Own, Sandlot, Field of Dreams and Major League can remind us of childhood and simpler summer times.
However, there are two sides to every argument. Senior Kane McGovern said, “I like football season better because there are less games and it makes every game more competitive.”
Sal Zampiri agrees, saying, “NFL season is better in my opinion because the games are more fast paced.”
This argument has been fueled for years, even major sport broadcasting stations have gotten into the fight. Fox sports released an article in October 2016 stating the nine reasons baseball is better than football. They compare the cost of a baseball game which is significantly less than a football game. Also they bring up the argument that baseball has players on both the pitcher’s mound as well as the batters box. They also go into comparing Major League favorites such as Albert Pujlos to all other athletes in the NFL! Yes the article is opinionated, but so it the whole argument itself.
TopTenz.net jumped into the argument in 2011 when they released an article saying the NFL is better than MLB. They bring into account the pressure of a play clock, the hype for only one day of games a week and and the bonding of brotherhood through the team.
Where ever your heart lies, whether in MLB or NFL, the important thing is to find a team you love, buy their jersey and kick your feet back and enjoy the game!
