The Cabrini Cavaliers go above and beyond in the classroom and certainly give their all on the field. For the week of March 11, the AEC players of the week are Steve Priest, Andrew Corso, Nicholas Waligurksi, Riley White and Avery Murphy. This is an honor for athletes who achieve greatness in their sport for that week. For the week of March 11, five students were recognized for their spring sports achievement.
“It feels nice to be appreciated for excellence on the field, especially after all the hard work you put in at practice,” Steve Priest, a sophomore exercise science major, said. “I think AEC recognizes players because they want to honor the success and hard work of an individual, who deserved the honors. It shows appreciation of success.”
Priest was recognized for his five RBIs and three hits in the game against Hilbert College. The third basemen also had a two-run double.
“Being named a player of the week is nice, but ultimately the season is over the span of around three months and it’s not about what I do individually for a week, but it’s about overall team success throughout the entirety of the season,” Priest said.
Andrew Corso is a junior undeclared major who recently transferred to Cabrini. Corso had a shutout during the game on Sunday, March 10, only allowing three hits and struck out four of the Hawks from Hilbert College.
“As a transfer student, I wanted to come to Cabrini and make an immediate impact,” Corso said. “I am grateful that my coaches trusted me and are willing to give me the opportunity to do so. The season right now is going very well, we are off to a hot start, but as one of my favorite quote states, ‘It’s not how you start that matters, it’s how you finish.’ I believe that the hot start has given us some momentum and we look forward to carrying that momentum throughout the rest of the season.”
Recently being on the team moved to the number five rankings in the NCAA conference, Nicholas Waligurksi, senior with a master of science in leadership, also had thoughts on the recognition.
“It’s humbling to be recognized by the AEC,” Waligurski said. “I have to give credit to my teammates. Unfortunately, due to some injuries, different guys have had to step up and have been doing a great job filling roles and playing unselfish lacrosse.”
This is not the first time lacrosse players from Cabrini have been recognized by the conference and it surely won’t be the last.
“I think as an athlete, it helps to push you to not be satisfied,” Waligurski said. “It’s still a young season and we have a lot to work on if we want to accomplish the goals we know we are capable of.”
Riley White, a senior education major, is a lacrosse player who had lots of action on March 9. White had nine saves and he caused a turnover which helped the Cavalier’s win the game. The game ended with a 17-5 win to the number 13 team, Ithaca College.
White’s advice for any goalie is “To have an obsession for that position so strong that they will do everything it takes to get better every day, having a great defense in front of you also helps.”
Avery Murphy, a senior communications major, was named for the second time this season for AEC women’s lacrosse offensive player. Murphy had 10 goals and three assists on the March 9 game which was a 21-19 loss at the number 21 team, Haverford College.
“In my senior year, I am always striving to play my best game every game,” Murphy said. “Earning player of the week is a nice accolade as I know it will come to an end this year.”
