Self image is a big issue in today’s society. Women get up everyday and try to look their best. Unfortunately this confident image can be destroyed in seconds.

Founders Lobby is a big place for women to enter when walking to class or even the café. Sometimes as they walk by, men will say things to the women to try and get their attention. This almost always has to do with the way they look.

This can either make or break a girl’s confidence. “Knowing this kind of behavior happens on campus makes me feel a little uncomfortable.” Marykate Sapata said. “It almost does not surprise me though. They say ‘boys will be boys’ so no one ever really tells them that what they are doing is wrong. Sometimes guys will even cheer on their friends when doing this.”

Students are sometime unaware of the ‘cat-calling’ that goes on around campus, but those who do, the feedback is not good. “I have seen it before.” Said Jessica Hayes freshman. “It doesn’t happen very often but some guys do it to me. One even said “there goes my future baby mama” as I walked by which annoyed me.” “Of course I feel flattered when someone compliments me, but not when it’s in a form of cat-calling. That just makes me feel weird.” said Hayes.

Not only do women see this happening, but men do to. Senior Dan Plowman said “I did not even know this was happening at our school. But if it is really happening, it is definitely not acceptable at all. Guys should not treat women like that, they need to have more respect for the female gender.”

If girls ‘cat-called’ guys while they were walking by it would be considered awkward and weird. So why is it not weird for males to do it to females?

Although this happens on college campus, it happens everywhere too. “I think it all depends on where you are. Living in Philly you could be cat called no matter where you are. In general, I would expect it more outside of school because there is no authority. There are really no limitations outside of a campus. said Marykate Sapata.
