Cabrini’s golf team back into swing in March

Cabrini’s golf team will be back into the swing of things this March. Returning golfers along with an additional four to five new players will head down to Ocean City, Md. for “boot camp” as coach Dr. Tony Verdi likes to refer to it. There they will begin practicing for their upcoming matches and tournaments, which will follow once they return.

“As a team we learn a lot from Dr. Verdi’s boot camp. It helps us build stamina and it prepares us for the season so that it will just flow,” said senior team captain Anthony D’Alel.

The golf team will start their regular practice on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at St. Davids, Springford Country Club in Royersford or Plymouth Country Club. The majority of their practices are held at Springford Country Club, which is their home course. So when the golf team invites other colleges to play this is where they host the match.

With only a few weeks of practice the golf team has to prepare itself for the start of the tournaments, which take place at the end of March. Many of the matches are spread out over the course of just a few months. This year the team is participating in three big tournaments called the Invitationals. They hope to place second or third in the championships due to the fact that Wesley College in Dover, Del. has been undefeated for several consecutive years.

“We have an outside chance to get second place, but realistically I expect we will get third or fourth. The competition is always so close with one or two strokes, but Wesley decides,” Dr. Verdi said.

The top players this year will be a head to head battle between sophomore Elliott Kohr and senior Alex Bouts. With an almost identical handicap they will be trading places throughout the course of the season.

“This year Dr. Verdi has compiled a diverse and challenging schedule for us. I think that this will be our strongest year and we will end with a decent finish,” said Kohr.
