On September 30, 2015, director of the center of Student Engagement and Leadership, Anne Filippone and assistant director, Amber LaJeunesse, held their second “Know Yourself” workshop in the Iadorola building in room 118. The LEADstrong hosts have been running self awareness workshops since the Fall of 2011, but this one marks only the second annual time that LEADstrong used the “true colors” activity that they have adopted.
“Know Yourself is really focused on helping students understand themselves a little bit better, and building self awareness,” Filippone said. We do that with a fun activity, through the true color exercise.
“You have to know yourself to be a strong leader and to better understand how other people lead,” LaJeunesse said. “It’s about knowing yourself and understanding the different strengths that you have, your characteristics.”
Junior, Thomas Hegedus, heard about the color-coded, self-awareness activity through a friend and decided to attend the workshop.
“Well we got a worksheet and it had all these adjectives and we ranked them based off who we think we are, and it resulted into a secti on (a color) of who we are,” Hegedus said. “I think it really gave me the chance to see who I really am, how compatible I am with other people, what I’m like and others are like.”
“The part I liked most about the workshop was that I felt comfortable there. I felt comfortable enough to speak my mind and I liked interacting with the people there,” Hegedus, a member of LEADstrong, said. “LEADstrong is a great program to help build not only yourself, but to help build relationships between others and prepare you for the future, because I want to get to know other people and get to know who I really and how I can make myself better. “
“Well, we definitely want the attendees to have a better understanding of how they approach different situations, a better understanding of their skills and abilities and what they bring to the table when working in a group setting,” Filippone said.
