Conditions weren’t ideal for Cabrini’s women’s lacrosse was playing catch-up for the first third of the game. Though at around minute 10 of the first half Cabrini woke up and started a scoring streak that would last them nearly the whole game. The game concluding with a final score of Cabrini 16 – Ursinus 6.
Things didn’t look like they were shaping up to be a good game for the team. The score was 3 to 5, the half was nearly over, and it was shaping up to be a low scoring game. Snow still in piles on the sidelines and below freezing weather conditions made for a grim opening game of the season. But, it’s nothing they hadn’t trained for.
“I think what helped us was that we had two big scrimmages before this,” head coach Jackie Neary said. “Those two scrimmages really prepared us to be live today. I’m really impressed with how hard they worked.”
It would almost be an understatement to say they worked hard. The team went from being down by two to scoring 12 points in a row. Clearly the Cavaliers didn’t like what it felt like to be losing.
“I think we played well together as a team,” Morgan Fazzini, freshman exercise science major, said. “Especially because when we were losing by like two or three and we really came back that second half.”
For a team with a handful of freshman starters those who don’t know the Cavaliers probably didn’t expect a win like this from them. Though with a lot of practice and preparation with their two scrimmage games under their belt they were more than equipped for this win.
“There’s always going to be things we need to improve upon. I think right now though, we’re just excited to get this win cause we had several freshman out there so it’s good to see how well they did as a team,” Neary said, confident in their upcoming game against the Bates College Thursday, Feb. 21.
It’s no doubt that the winning of the opening game is a great morale boost for the start of the season.
