The Cabrini men’s golf team has been very successful the past few seasons. The Cavaliers are the reigning CSAC champions.
The team’s roster has plenty of experience from the past few seasons. The Cavaliers are coached by Tana Thomas with assistant coaches Ginny Bullock and Joseph Myers.
Coach Thomas was named head coach in June in 2017. She recently coached at Immaculata University from 2005-2016. Thomas has been a head coach at all levels for the last 18 years, while giving golf instructions over the same period of time.
The golf team has been very successful over the recent few years. With all that success, new players dedicating themselves to the team is vital. When a team is successful over a span of years, there must be new players to chip into that success.
“The first step would be to contact me and an evaluation of tournament experience, handicap and documented scoring average would be assessed,” Thomas said, when asked about how to join the golf team.
Thomas went on to add that the next step is a tryout, which may involve a round of golf or a practice session.
Clay Anders, a senior on the team, believes one of the best aspects of being on the roster is traveling for tournaments and for spring break with his team.
Anders credits his experience and love for the game as to why he wanted to be a part of the golf team.
“It can be a little challenging sometimes with classes, but for the most part, practice is around our school schedules,” Anders said.
Anders currently is at 12 over par for the season, which is third best on the team. It can be difficult for a student athlete to juggle school work and practice. The golf team has two different seasons: there is a spring and fall season.
Spring is the traditional season, as practice is Monday through Friday whenever the student is finished class for the day.
“Tournaments are at least weekly or sometimes more from mid-March until the end of April,” Thomas said. “The fall is less demanding. There are just as many tournaments, if not more, but the practice schedule is more flexible. All practicing is based on students availability around classes.”
Cabrini is currently 1-0 as they beat Neumann University by a score of 326-329. Thomas gives her players the freedom to prepare for the matches by their own design.
“On the day of competitions, each player goes through their own warm up routine that suits them, but would involve warming up on the driving range and hitting several putts to gauge the speed of the greens at each new site,” Thomas said.
