The Cabrini University women’s basketball team fell in a non-conference matchup against the visiting Middlebury Panthers with a final score of 59-65 on Nov. 30, 2019 at Nerney Field House.
The Cabrini Cavaliers looked to improve their 5-1 record against the Middlebury Panthers in their first matchup.
The Panthers started off strong in the first quarter strong against the Cavaliers, pulling ahead with 5:54 left in the quarter, controlling the remaining time and finishing the quarter with a score of 19-13.
However, the Cavaliers were able to rally back in the second quarter with 3:39 left in the quarter and down by 11. The Cavaliers were able to bring the game to a tie score of 30-30 at the end of the first half.
Through the first half, the Cavaliers were led by junior Ashley Tutzauer, who scored 11 points during the half. Senior Cassidy Gallagher and freshman Miranda Liebtag each scored 5 points during the half.
The Panthers were able to pull ahead and keep a lead over the Cavaliers for most of the second half of the game. However, the Cavaliers would not make it easy for the Panthers. In the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers made a comeback after finishing the third quarter trailing 46-42. Not allowing the Panthers to gain more than a three-point lead over the Cavaliers through most of the fourth quarter; while the Panthers did allow the Cavaliers to pull ahead by more than one point in the quarter. Ultimately, the Cavaliers would fall to the Panthers 65-59 after the Panthers were able to pull away with five points from Panthers free throws in the final minute of the game.
In the second half of play, the Cavaliers were led by Tutzauer, scoring eight points for the Cavaliers. Junior Kate Lannon was able to score six points and post five rebounds. Junior Lexi Edwards also scored six points during the half.
Through both halves, the Cabrini Cavaliers were led by Tutzauer, who scored a total of 19 points and posted two steals. Lannon and Gallagher each tallied a total of eight points and five rebounds during the game. Edwards and Liebtag also scored eight points during Saturday’s game against the Panthers.
The Middlebury Panthers were led by Betsy Knox who posted a double-double with a total of 20 points scored and 13 rebounds during the game against the Cavaliers. Knox also tallied two steals during the game. Maya Davis tallied a total of 17 points and nine rebounds against the Cavaliers, while teammate Kira Waldman scored 13 points and totaled six rebounds.
Following the loss against the Middlebury Panthers on Saturday, the Cavaliers record moves to 5-2. The Cabrini Cavaliers will next play at Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019.
