On Tuesday afternoon, the baseball team battled it out in a home game against Eastern University. After 10 innings, the score remained tied at 5-5. Due to darkness, officials called the game around 6p.m. Both teams must resume the game on Tuesday, March 19, at 3 p.m. at Eastern.
“We did all right but we left lots of runners on,” said junior catcher Henry Peguero. “We definitely could’ve beat them; we’re a better team than that. For next time, we’re just gonna try and better prepare our bats.”
Cabrini started out with a strong lead, scoring four runs in the first two innings. However, the Eagles managed to regain their footing, scoring four runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Many of the spectators sat on the edge of their seats as Cabrini spent several innings only one run ahead of Eastern.
In the top of the eighth inning, Eastern outfielder Brady DiGiacomo hit a home run to tie the game, both teams now standing at five runs. Neither team scored any runs in the ninth inning, forcing the game into the 10th inning. Zero runs were scored in the additional innings and the game was ultimately called. Officials decided the game would be resumed the following Tuesday when Cabrini was scheduled to have their second game against Eastern.
Cabrini pitchers Ray Lutick, Drew Swire and Tyler Ronayne combined for five innings out of the bullpen allowing one run.
Despite the wind and cold temperatures, the game had a great turnout. In addition to the many parents and students in attendance, President Taylor’s wife, Leisha Taylor, and Father Carl Janicki also made an appearance to support the Cavaliers.
“They played well today,” said the mother of freshman infielder Garrett Laraia. “The team already has several wins under their belt from Florida, so I’d say they’re still off to a really great start to the season.”
