Anti-rape nail polish could save lives

One in five female students is sexually assaulted before they graduate college. Ninety percent of sexual assaults happen on college campuses. Because of these statistics, college partying just got a little bit safer. Four creative and proactive college students at North Carolina University (Ankesh Madan, Tyler Confrey-Maloney, Stephen Grey and Tasso Von Windheim) have come up with a nail polish that actually changes color when it comes in contact with three of the most common date-rape drugs: Rohypnol, Xanax and GHB.

This trendy new invention has the duel purpose of style and safety. While going out, having fun and looking her best, all a girl has to do is simply dip her polished finger in her drink. If the color changes, the drink has been drugged. The girl can now drop the drink and leave the party safely.

Although this seems like such a positive invention, there has been some negative talk about the product. Critics have said that rather than fighting against the issue of rape itself, this product just puts the job of fighting this fight on the women alone. Some say that instead of finding ways to protect women from rape, someone should be finding a way to stop rape all together.

The young women of Cabrini have something to say about the stylish guard. “The nail polish is helpful because it gives women power that they don’t normally have, and anyone who criticizes it needs to realize that until we live in a world where people don’t think that way, we need ways to empower ourselves, and the nail polish helps with that,” Kristina Giles, a sophomore marketing major, said. This comment and others similar ones showed a general positive outlook on the nail polish from the college women here.
