When attending sporting events at Cabrini, something that a student might think not think about is whether or not race or ethnicity plays a part in their own attendance of the game or a part of the attendance of anyone at the game.
This raises the question of possibly whether or not the race of the players has anything to do with why certain people attend a game.
“I feel that if someone is going to or not going to a sporting event based on the players race that they are being very judgmental,” Nicolette Murabito, sophomore, said. If people do not watch a certain sport based on the race of the players, they are arrogant.”
“No one should not watch a sport based on the race and ethnicity of the players, they should watch it for the love of the sport and the talent of the players involved, Murabito said. “I feel uncomfortable answering these questions because that thought never has crossed my mind.”
“I think race should not play a role on whether or not you watch a sports game. People should watch sports games because they love the sport, not because of the players race,” Ryan Taylor, sophomore, said. “I think people who chose to watch or not watch a sports game just because of the race of the players are ignorant and racist.”
“I was raised to always respect others and treat others fair,” Saleem Brown, associate director of the First-Year Experience, said. “So it doesn’t matter who’s playing or what their race is, I just love watching sports,”
The idea of someone watching a game based on the player’s race, is not a thought that most people entertain. However, it is still something that makes people wonder why sporting events here on campus always tend to have a more dominant race in attendance.
“Me and my friends only go to the basketball games because that’s the only sport that we are really interested in,” Mariah Sessoms, sophomore, said. “I don’t watch sports because of race. I watch sports based off of interest especially if I played it before.”
“This is the 21st century and I do not believe that me nor anyone I associate with would ever not attend an event because of a player’s race,” Samantha Penecale, sophomore, said. “I do believe, however, that there is still racism in this world and that there are people who will not attend events because of race.”
“If someone isn’t watching or participating in a sport because of race that is just ridiculous in my head,” Tyheim Monroe, sophomore, said.
The race in attendance at different sports here on campus does not necessarily have anything to do with the race of the players of the game. The students here at Cabrini attend these games to support their friends and classmates along with the love for the sport.
“I attend and watch the sporting events because I enjoy watching the sport. It doesn’t matter about the race of the athletes,” Kyle Barth, senior, said. “I personally never thought of questions like this but I’m sure they are important questions to be answered because it is an interesting topic to be asked about.”
