Emily BuergerThe women’s softball team came out on top last Tuesday, April 10 after their game vs. Rosemont winning 9-0 and 9-1.
“Going into Rosemont, I think we were all a little apprehensive about the game,” Brittany Caprice, a junior elementary education major, said. Caprice said that while Rosemont had not been “at the top” in past years, the team was well aware that a new year brought in a new team “with different abilities.”
“We knew we couldn’t take this game lightly and nothing about the final score reflected it that way. It was a huge win for us!”
The Lady Cavs also played Cedar Crest on Friday, April 13 and brought home the win with 3-2 and 5-4.
“Cedar Crest is a team that has been making a name for itself for the past few years. They have become stronger and stronger and like Rosemont, we knew this game could not be under estimated,” Caprice said. “We brought our offensive game and our defense picked up as well.”
Women’s Softball coach Martine Susko said that she was “very pleased” with this year’s program and with the win especially vs. Cedar Crest.
“The latter earned a position in the play-offs last season after splitting a double-header against us earlier in the season. To come back strong and take two from a rapidly growing program was one of our goals this season going into the PAC,” Susko said.
Caprice described the offensive end of the game as a definite strength in the team and one that has undoubtedly improved.
“We came from losing almost every game in our preseason to being 8-2 in the PAC. The only way that we were able to become 8-2 in the PAC was from bringing our bats,” Caprice said. “You can’t win a game without scoring runs. You can’t score runs without hitting the ball!”
Caprice was nice when telling about the team’s strengths but realistic enough to understand that “every team out there has weaknesses” and that one of the principal weaknesses is the lack of communication.
“There were often times when plays should have been made that weren’t because we were not communicating properly,” Caprice said. “But I think this is a problem that every athletic team faces.”
Coach Susko has high hopes and is definitely seeing a bright future for the team. “Our greatest achievement last year was taking at least one game from every single PAC school. This year, we hope to build on that by sweeping more opponents, all in an effort to bring back the softball title to Cabrini,” Susko said.
“I have every expectation that we will continue to improve over the next couple of weeks, putting us once again in a race for the top seed entering the play-off picture. We work harder every day to better ourselves and each other,” Susko said.
“I absolutely have no doubt in my mind that we will make it to the PAC championships.?It was a bit rocky in the beginning,” Caprice said.” “The past few weeks have shown that we are the team to beat.”
