The rain did not stop Cabrini students from attending Cabrini Activities and Programming Board’s Open Mic Night on Monday, Nov. 13.
Four Cabrini students performed three songs each for a panel of student judges to promote their musical talents and seize the first place prize of $100. Many other students enjoyed the music, fellowship, and refreshments as they watched from the audience.
The winner of the competition was Ryan Conklin, a senior English and communication major, who played three covers, including a hit by Weezer entitled “The Sweater Song.” In his performance Conklin got the audience involved and demonstrated his talents.
“I think Ryan was really entertaining and he was a crowd-pleaser.” Sophomore education major Nicole Necci said of Conklin’s performance.
The second place prize of $50 went to sophomore English and secondary education major, Jen Davis. Davis played three of her original songs, and was the first place winner of this year’s previous Open Mic Night.
Davis has been writing her own music and playing piano for eight years, and has
been playing guitar for four years.
“It doesn’t take long at all to write songs, I finish them within a day or a couple of hours, and it takes about a week to finalize them,” Davis said of her original music pieces. “I used to write poetry and I’ve always liked to sing so I turned my poetry into songs.”
Other performers were freshman philosophy major Julian Maliszewski and junior accounting major Chris Sweeney, who both brought great performances to the night.
The crowd was very pleased with the performances given. First time Open Mic Night attendees were surprised to discover such musically talented students.
“I never realized the talent on campus,” freshman pre-med/biology major Lizzie Williams said. “I really enjoyed tonight’s performances.”
The venue of Open Mic Night was changed from Jazzman’s to Grace Hall.
“The first one at Jazzman’s got more of a walk through crowd but it is nice here with the candles,” sophomore finance and math major, Shannon Santangelo said.
CAP board member, sophomore English and communication major Ashley Correll favors Grace Hall over Jazzmans.
“This location gives the night a more intimate feel.” Correll said.
The CAP board was very happy with the outcome on such a rainy evening.
