The Cabrini men’s soccer team lost to Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham on Saturday at the Edith Robb Dixon Field. The game ended with FDU Devils beating the Cabrini Cavaliers 2-1. The Cavaliers fought until the last second unable to score a goal to tie the game.
The Cavaliers trailed by two at the end of the first half because of goals scored by FDU’s junior midfielder Caleb Aryiku and junior forward Ricky La Stella. Freshman defense Oliver Trujillo and
sophomore midfielder Salvador Vassallo assisted with those goals, respectively. Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, freshman forward Tyler Tomlin scored a goal for Cabrini with the help of senior midfielder Kostas Slikas.
“I felt pretty good and I was hoping that we’ll get another one,” Tomlin said after the game looking back at his goal. “I think we should’ve won that game.”
Despite Cabrini’s 19-shot attempts and junior goalkeeper Anthony Zampirri’s seven saves, FDU protected their net and secured the victory.
“I’m disappointed with the result, obviously,” Zampirri said, “and I think we’ll just try to come out strong the next game.”
Devils sophomore goalkeeper Tiernan Gray came up with six saves contributing to FDU’s fourth straight win. The game was FDU – Florham’s first four-game winning streak since October 2016.
“Our goalie came up big,” FDU junior defense Kenneth Campen said. “He made some big saves for us.”
The Cavaliers have an overall record of 3-6-1 (wins-losses-tied games). Cabrini will be playing Alvernia University on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Alvernia in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Cavaliers will be back on Edith Robb Dixon Field on Wednesday, Oct. 9, against Neumann University.
On the other hand, the Devils have an overall record of 5-2-1. FDU – Florham will be playing at Cairn University on Wednesday, Oct. 2. They will be playing on their home field on Wednesday, Oct. 9, against Montclair State University.
“It was a long hard-fought game,” Campen said. “We were up two – nothing in the first half. Second half, Cabrini came out hard. They scored a quick goal and we defended hard for the last 40 minutes of the game.”
