Cabrini’s fall team sports have set a trend by having five student-athletes named by the Atlantic East Conference as they were mentioned among the weekly list of honors for the second week in a row.
Freshman Matthew Duddy was named men’s soccer player of the week while his teammate and goalkeeper junior, Anthony Zampirri was named men’s soccer defensive player of the week.
In Volleyball, sophomore Gina Custer was listed on the volleyball honor roll for the week.
Other athletes who received the honor roll this week was junior back, Maria Hagan and senior back, Marissa Portelli both on the Women’s Soccer team.
Zampirri stated this award was given to him because of his teammates. He is not able to perform at the level he is performing at right now if he did not have his defense to back him up. Zampirri noted that he doesn’t play to be honored or get any awards, he plays to win with his best friends.
“I would say that I got the selection because of how well my defense and team played. My team does a great job setting me up for success as they always have in the past and I appreciate their hard work and determination to win,” Zampirri, junior goalie and business management major, said.
Matthew Duddy, a freshman finance major, has had a huge impact on the team this year. He scored two goals against DeSales to lead the Cavaliers to an out-of-conference home win.
“It definitely changes how I’m going forward because it made me realize all the work we put in at practice pays off,” Duddy said. He loves the pride that comes along with winning and receiving an award.
He really emphasized how it makes him work harder and he not only pushes himself to do better but pushes his teammates as well.
Gina Custer, a sophomore early education major, and defensive specialist for the Cavaliers was very honored to be recognized for her hard work this week.
She said going forward she has to work even harder in order to stay consistent in the classroom and on the volleyball court.
All these athletes have worked very hard to be recognized in each of their sports. Their hard work does not stop now though. They will continue to keep working hard and putting in time at practices and games. They all want to improve on their individual skills as well as working with their teams making sure they are always ready for their next opponent.
