Clothes. Piles and piles of clothes. Are they clean, dirty, in between? You don’t even know. Organization of your closets may seem like an endless task. The clothes are worn, washed, then need to be put away. If your clothes are not in this process, they begin to build up in piles in your room.

Keeping everything organized

A study shows that having clutter or unfinished projects in you room makes women more depressed, fatigued and stressed then women who feel they have organized rooms. Why is this? Coming home after a long day of school or work is exhausting. Most people want to go home and just sleep.

When your room is a mess it is difficult to prepare for the next day. People look at the mess and usually want to clean it but feel that they are to tired and will do it another time. Not knowing where things are can also make you late to events. Needing those certain pants for that interview and finally finding them at the bottom of the dirty pile can make a person feel stressed and overwhelmed.

“I keep my room very organized. I think it can make you feel less stressed because things on your floor or out of place can become overwhelming and it is a lot easier just to know where everything is instead of looking for it everywhere,” junior psychology major Diana Vansickle said.

Color Coordinated

Color coding your closets will save you lots of time. Finding outfits that work together will become much easier and quicker. Your closet will also look attractive. You will realize that every article of clothing now has a place, so when putting clothes away you know exactly where it is going and where it will be when you need it.

Have you ever bought something and came home and realized you already have something exactly like it? Color coordinated closets can help limit this. By seeing what’s in your closet people tend to spend less money because they see what they have and what can be paired with it.

How to save time with outfits

One way to save time in the morning before school or work is to plan ahead. Having outfits picked out for the entire week with everything you need for that day including shoes, socks and the outfit will save time and stress.

By taking a few minutes on a Sunday to prepare for the week you will save yourself stress and thinking early in the morning what to wear. Lining the outfits up in a good space in your room will give you more time to do other things.

How to keep up

Cleaning your room doesn’t have to become this horrible task you dread doing. Some ways to keep up with cleaning is to make it something that relaxes you. Play music while you are cleaning this way you are enjoying your music while being productive. Make sure you stay focused and complete your task so you have everything all organized. Make sure you have lots of light in your room, natural light is even better. Making a list of things that needs to be done and crossing them out as you go gives people a mental sense of success.

Once you are organized set aside a little time each day or every other day to keep up with the daily laundry and putting clothes away!

Tips

1. Set aside a few hours to clean your room, after this set aside a few minutes every other day to straighten things up.

2. Have hangers and an organization plan ready. Know where you want everything.

3. Have large trash bags on hand to throw away clothes you haven’t worn in three years. Donate anything you can and throw the rest away.

4. Remember don’t shove things in your closet!
