2013 Movie Review: Gangster Squad

“Gangster Squad” is the new 2013 mob movie that is filled with action, crime, and drama. It is based in Los Angeles in the year of 1949. It is about a secret crew of police officers lead by two determined sergeants in the police force who work together to achieve the difficulty of taking down the mob kind, Mickey Cohen. He runs the city of Los Angeles. This is based on a true-life story about the Los Angeles police unit going against Mickey Cohen. It was a ten year effort to stop him.

Mickey Cohen played by Sean Penn, has moved into Los Angeles and has the intention of controlling all of criminal activity in the city. Everyone in the city is on his side and no one wants to double cross him. The judges and police are all on his side, no one is willing to testify against him. There is one man who is willing to take down Cohen in any way possible. Sergeant John O’Mara, a former World War II solider played by Josh Brolin is someone who takes action to take down this criminal. He knows the danger he is getting himself into, but he wants to protect the city of Los Angeles. The police chief wants to form a special unit of cops to take on this mission. O’Mara strives to place Los Angeles as a good place to live for his wife and new family. The special unit of cops consists of an older detective, a partner, electronics expert and a policeman.

The movie is filled with action-packed and graphics of strong violence of how Cohen destroys his victims. It shows a content of dark, violent world of cops against gangsters. The movie shows the violence of gunfights, car chase, bloody fists fights, and how some police officers going beyond the law to deal with ruthless gangster squads.
