To infinity and beyond with Toy Story 4

Just when we thought it was all over, Woody, Buzz, Mr. Potato-head, Slinky and the gang are all coming back this summer with an exciting, brand new adventure in “Toy Story 4.”  Disney and Pixar are set to the release the movie for theaters in June.

When “Toy Story 3” ended it definitely seemed like the end of the franchise. The movie ended very bittersweet with Andy giving away all of his childhood toys to Bonnie, a pre-schooler, who would then love and play with them for years to come. So it came as a surprise when “Toy Story 4” was announced way back in 2014.

“Toy Story has transcended animated cinema since its conception, and I have been a fan since I first watched the first one,” Jason Coladenato, a sophomore English major, said. “I can’t wait to see another successful and inspirational Toy Story film.”

Many fans are counting down the days before they join Woody and Buzz on their newest adventure. Tim Allen, voice actor for Buzz Lightyear, says that it might not be the last time we get to see them on screen. “Once you’ve gotten to four, you’re passed that trilogy [point], so I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t do it, certainly,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “If you ask me, I’d say do five.”

The release date has been moved a couple of times. The film was officially announced by Disney in November 2014. The original release date was set to be June 16, 2017. The movie then got delayed a year later to June 15, 2018. And finally, it switched places with “The Incredibles 2” to its current date, June 21, 2019. Fun fact, in 2010, one of Toy Story creators Lee Unkrich said that there were no plans for a fourth film.

“Toy Story 4 should have came out years ago,” Nick Piscitelli, a sophmore management information major, said. “Toy Story 2 was one of my favorite movies when it came out.”

John Lasseter, who originally wrote the story for the fourth film, had set the plot to be a road trip to find Bo Peep.

The story has gone through several rewrites and re-imaginings. John Lasseter, later stepped down as co-director, and left Disney under allegations.  Approximately 75 percent of the script has been rewritten since those early days of production. Maybe some of John Lasseter’s original idea might remain in tact.

Most of the original actors have returned to do the voice-overs for the iconic characters. Among them are Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz, Joan Cusack as Jessie, and Annie Potts will be playing as Bo Peep, who wasn’t featured in “Toy Story 3.” However, two actors R. Lee Ermey, who played as the Army Sergeant, and Don Rickles, who played as Mr. Potato Head have passed away. So it is unknown if Pixar will recast those roles.
