Taco Bell is going to try and appeal to many vegans by applying a new vegan-friendly food menu to their restaurants.
Taco Bell has been offering options that are certified vegetarian by the American Vegetarian Association since 2015. Taco Bell already had some vegetarian options, like the Power Menu Veggie Burrito and 7-Layer Burrito, Taco Bell is also working on new items for customers to choose from.
A “Make it Meatless” feature on the taco chain’s app and website shows people how to customize their orders to exclude meat or dairy products. Other companies are trying to capitalize on diet-based resolutions, like Chipotle recently launched “lifestyle bowls,” which is a new collection of meals that fit into paleo and ketogenic diets.
“I love to eat meat. I don’t know about all this vegan stuff but I might try it out sometime,” Anthony Gatto, a philosophy major and occasional Taco Bell visitor said.
Many Americans, especially vegans, are glad that food chains like Taco Bell are expanding towards vegetarian foods. Organizations like PETA are pleased with what Taco Bell is doing and the company started off the New Year with their own seven major commitments.
“I think it is amazing that Taco Bell is including vegetarian options in their menus,” Brooke Palmer, an exercise science major, said. “I’m looking forward to eating cheese quesadillas all day.”
These commitments are like the companies New Year’s resolutions as they show aspects of the business such as hiring, scholarships and menus. The biggest change being the vegetarian menu.
“From simplifying our ingredients while improving food quality, to creating more new jobs, to improving our recycling efforts, these are just some of our promises to keep doing even better and being even better, and they are promises that we know we will keep,” Julie Masino, president of North America Taco Bell, said in a press release.
According to the company, Taco Bell has eight million vegetarian combinations and sells 350 million vegetarian items a year.
