Not everybody can be Zion Williamson and go to Duke for basketball. Not everybody can be Tyheim Monroe and be player of the year for Division lll. Not everybody can play a sport in college. So what do you do? Do you just go to school like everybody and never play the sport that you love or just like to play for fun.

Intramural basketball is for students who are not on an intercollegiate team. Intramural basketball is more fun and takes up less time for students. Cabrini offers intramural basketball in the spring from March to April. Just about six weeks plus playoffs and a championship game.  Orlin Jespersen, associate director of athletics, recreation, and community engagement is  in charge of intramural basketball.

“I want students to have fun,” Jespersen said. “Not everybody can play a sport in college, it’s much harder to make a team and takes alot more time,” he said.

“Playing intramural basketball is the best part of the year,” Elijah Elam said. “I’ve played every year here at Cabrini and it seems to get better every year, “I’m now a senior and I’ve tried out for the men’s basketball team twice.  I’ve never made it. It kind of seems like they already know their team from the summer. So I just play intramurals with my friends. It’s less work and less stress.”

“I hate running and lifting weights. I just want to hoop,” Elshaddai Miffin said. “I truly just want to play basketball. Sometimes I feel bad for those basketball guys because they have to work so hard and have all these practices, lift weights and run. Then on top of that they still have classes and homework,” He said. “That’s why I just stick with playing intramurals. It’s fun with friends and isn’t too much.”

Playing any college sport can take a toll on your body, can stress you out and have you busy all the time. Some people just love the sport and just want to play it for their enjoyment. Not everybody can handle the school work with the practices. Not everybody wants to always lift weights or run sprits.

If you’re interested in intramural basketball talk to Orlin Jespersen so you can even make a team or join one. You will play full games, two halves. There will be refs and fouls being called. You play two games every thrusday night. You do need at least a 2.0 GPA to play so make sure you stay on top of your grades.
