In James Cameron’s most recent film, he takes an adventure back to the Titanic. “Ghosts of the Abyss: An Immersive 3D Adventure” has a G rating and is now playing at the IMAX theater in King of Prussia. The movie runs a little over an hour and requires the audience to wear special 3D glasses.
Your host for the expedition is actor Bill Paxton, who appeared in the Titanic film. Oscar winning director James Cameron directs the underwater adventure along with a crew of scientists and archeologists. Throughout the film, the audience gets to see the wreckage of the famous ship Titanic, which sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. Your guide throughout the underwater documentary are two small remote controlled cameras nicknamed “Elwood” and “Jake.” These two cameras travel throughout the ship, giving images to the public that haven’t been seen since the doomed ship sank over 90 years ago. Cameron and the crew were able to maneuver “Elwood” and “Jake” into the sleeping quarters of the famous “Unsinkable Molly Brown” as well as the man in charge of the ship, Captain Smith.
Near the end of the documentary, the crew runs into trouble when “Elwood”, suddenly loses power and stops working while inside of the ship. The crew then sets out on a mission to rescue the camera. After much stress and anxiety, the audience then watches as the camera is pulled back into safety and the crew leaves a plaque on the great ship as a sign of it’s expedition.
Overall, the movie gives the audience a chance to witness firsthand the history behind the Titanic. It helps put a face to those lives that were lost. It celebrates human strength as well as the invention of new technology that allows such expeditions to take place. It is a movie that the whole family can view together and enjoy.
