Woodcrest Magazine is an award-winning literary magazine run by the English department.  The title of the magazine ste
ms from the college’s old yearbook called Woodcrest Yearbook. Originally the magazine was only available in the print version, which was started by Dr. Seth Frechie, English professor. Since 2010, Dr. Amy Persichetti has been the faculty adviser of the magazine and helped to create the online version of the magazine.

Woodcrest Magazine offers readers a wide variety of topics such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry, reviews and visual arts. Falling under the visual arts category is photography and art. Students as well as alumni of Cabrini College can submit pieces of work that they wish to get published.  The process of publishing this magazine takes about a year. This is strictly a student-run magazine.

A team of editors get together weekly and discuss the magazine as well as work on assembling it.  Majority of the editors are made up of English majors. That does not mean that other majors can not get involved. No matter what major a student is, Woodcrest Magazine welcomes them to send in pieces that they are passionate about.

“I love that people are able to express themselves through writing and Woodcrest is an open opportunity for people to publish what they desire: it truly shows their character,” senior, Alexis Cunningham, said.  This magazine is different from others because it lets students shares their passions and ideas.

Since turning from a hardcover print version to an online version it has won many awards.  The biggest award was won in the 2013-2014 school year.  Woodcrest Magazine was a Gold Medalist.  This is a prestigious award given by Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Cabrini beat out many top schools including Ivy League schools.

“From where I sit, this is not only a celebration of all our hard work, it confirms that writers on this campus can compete at a national level,” Persichetti said.

If you want to get involved in Woodcrest Magazine there are plenty of options.  If you would like to submit a piece of your art or writing you can contact woodcrestproject@gmail.com. If you feel like you want to get more involved you are able to be enrolled in two courses. Those courses are English 420 as well as English 432. “Being that we have a relatively small student body, and an even smaller editorial staff, being able publish such an outstanding magazine is really impressive,” editor, Sarah Alstrom, said.
