Why I Write

By Samantha Jacobs

I write because I want to do something extraordinary.

The knowledge and experiences I have gained in my four years of college have molded the way that I look at the world as graduation draws nearer.

I did not find my passion for writing until junior year when I signed up for my first journalism class, but I have not stopped since the day I wrote my first article.

Along with this class I took a class titled “Working for Global Justice,” which opened my mind to issues that I have become extremely passionate about.

I write for all of the women around the world trapped in poverty and unable to speak up; for the women with no power; for the young girls who will become mothers at age twelve; for those even in first-world situations who feel they cannot be heard.

I am blessed to be able to share my opinions freely, report on serious issues, continue to educate myself and advance in a career of my choice.

As a fan of YouTubers SprinkleofGlitter and Ingrid Nilson, I was excited to hear the recent news that they would be “change ambassadors” for the United Nations, along with a handful of other female YouTubers around the world, specifically focusing on the developmental goal to empower women around the world.

Even in America I witness the inequality of women. For example, one weekend a customer at the cafe I work in tipped the two males I was working with and told them it was because they work harder than females as I was turned around cleaning up after a rush.

Sadly, this is a minuscule problem in the United States compared to the struggles women face around the world as I had the opportunity to see on a trip to Guatemala.

The women in Guatemala spend their days searching for water, trying to feed their families and watching children. Lack of clean water, food and shelter mean that women there rarely have time to break away from the gender roles and receive an education.

Long story short, they cannot write for themselves.

So I write for them.

  1. Sammie, You will do extraordinary things. God sees your heart and has a plan for your life. You will be able to help women and children to become all that they could be. Your voice has just begun to be heard. There are so many women who suffer unjustly in this world. My prayer for you is that you will continue to be the most amazing woman that I know and love. You make this Nana so proud to call you my Granddaughter.
    Love & Prayers Always, Nana
