Gordon William Allport said, “Love received and love given comprise the best form of therapy.” This statement can be held somewhat true to many, but to sophomore couple Andrew Smith and Patrice Doyle, its realism.

The two met as freshmen, both living in New Residence Hall.

“One of the girls that lived in my hall last year went to high school with his roommate, so one night we decided to go over and say hi and that’s when I met Andrew,” Doyle said. “It was great because I got the butterflies when I saw him.”

“I was a little shy when I first met Patrice, but after that passed we became good friends. I thought she was very friendly and really nice,” Smith said.

A few months into their relationship came some difficulties. Patrice was faced with illness and had to be admitted to the hospital. “When I was in the ICU last year, I realized that Andrew did care about me and that I cared for him because he stayed with me through the whole thing even when I was close to dying,” Doyle said.

“I was worried for her health and wanted her to come back soon. I didn’t think that it would be anything to be scared away by,” Smith said. “In fact, that was probably when I began to realize that I loved her.”

The best kind of therapy in their specific case seems to have been love that the two were giving to each other in a difficult time, but what made them tick when Patrice returned back to school? “I think the most important thing that makes our relationship work is our understanding of each other and the fact that we are best friends,” Doyle said. “Understanding is definitely the key in all relationships and it’s great that we have that.”

“I think that Andrew really is a great guy and I feel so lucky to have met him. I hope that all girls out there can find a guy that makes them laugh and treats them great,” Doyle said. When asked about Valentine’s Day plans, she said, “That is all up to Andrew.”

Smith said, “The one thing I can say about Patrice is that I love her. She is a great girl. She is the best friend anyone can have. She listens to you when you need someone and gives great advice. As far as Valentine’s Day goes, it’s a secret.”
