Pop artist Demi Lovato debuts documentary on YouTube

Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil is a YouTube series about Demi Lovato and is about the past few years. The last few years for Lovato have been eventful including an overdose that nearly killed her. There are four episodes and each episode is around 25 minutes long.

Lovato, her family, her friends and her team summarize the events that lead up to Lovato’s 2018 near-death overdose. Lovato mentions that reached a breaking point with her addiction and mental health that she had never reached before. 

Lovato speaks about breaking six years of sobriety, trying harder drugs including heroin, as well as traumatic sexual assaults that have shaped her relationship with drugs and her own body. 

Dancing with the Devil is also a single on Lovato’s seventh studio album Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over. Potential spoilers down below.

Episode 1

The episode starts off with footage from an unreleased documentary that was filming Lovato during her “Tell Me You Love Me” tour. The unreleased documentary stopped production because of Lovato’s overdose.

This episode goes over Lovato’s guilt over her dad’s death, pageants prompted her struggles with food at a young age and  Lovato broke sobriety two weeks after she celebrated six years sober.

Also, Lovato was introduced to heroin and crack cocaine and Lovato wrote “Sober” while in Bali.

“I remember actually making a pact with myself saying, ‘If I don’t win this pageant, I will never eat again,’” Lovato said while talking about pageants.

The end of the episode ends with the 911 call that was made when Lovato overdosed on July 24, 2018. 

Episode 2

The episode starts off the morning of the overdose and the events that lead after that. Lovato and her closest friends and family give a firsthand account of the aftermath of the overdose as she wakes up in the hospital.

This episode goes over Lovato’s overdose made the news before her mom knew it happened, the overdose has left Lovato with permanent damage and Lovato only tried crack and heroin because she had previously enjoyed the combination of uppers and downers.

Also, Lovato believes she had been sexually assaulted by her dealer that night and if found 10 minutes later she would have been dead.

“That kind of trauma doesn’t go away overnight,” Lovato said. “And it doesn’t go away in the first few months of rehab either. That’s something that sticks with you for a while after.”

The episode ends with how she was able to not be her dad by dying of an overdose. Lovato’s father died of an overdose.

Episode 3

The episode starts off Lovato’s journey through rehab and her road to recovery. 

This episode covers Lovato’s friends who felt an immediate backlash after her overdose, Scooter Braun initially did not want to take Lovato on as a client and Lovato relapsed after she had returned from rehab.

Also, she mentioned that she was raped as a teenager. 

“My fans are amazing. They’re passionate. But they’re a little out of line sometimes,” Lovato said while talking about her friends getting backlash. 

The episode ends with Lovato performing at the 2020 Grammys and the National Anthem at the Super Bowl LIII.

Episode 4

The episode starts off with interviewing many different celebrities including Christina Aguilera and goes on about how they got Lovato through her recovery.

This episode covers how quarantine has been beneficial for Lovato’s mental health, Lovato calls her relationship with former fiancé Max Ehrich “false advertising” and  she feels she is “too queer to marry a man in her life right now.”

Also, she said she smokes marijuana and drinks in moderation and Lovato may have been misdiagnosed as bipolar when she was 18.

“Realizing the high I wanted would kill me is what I needed to get me clean for good,” Lovato said while talking about her overdose.

The episode ends with Lovato how she has to fight with addiction every day. 

With how big of a pop star Demi Lovato many students have knowledge of Demi Lovato overdose.

“I knew that she almost died but I never knew how bad it actually was,” Michael Taylor, freshman business major, said.
