We can all say that music makes life so much better. On road trips, parties, family gathering and holidays, we count on music to spice up the scene. People depend on music to determine their mood but does music effect your mental health in a positive way?

Music is one of the elements that calms your mind. Listening to happy music will put you in a good mood, listening to sad music will make you sad and listening to upbeat music may make you dance, but it’s the music that helps you through the tough times that matters the most.

Everyone has that one go-to song that they depend on to change their mood around. That one song that helps them through their lowest and for Justin Schneiderman, a sophomore early childhood education major, “Fight Song,” by Rachel Platten is what got him through his hard times.

“I do believe music helps you through tough times because I have always turned to music to express myself when words fail,” Schneiderman said.

Schneiderman said that music has always gotten him through the hard times and the good times.

“Sometimes when I’m feeling down, a sad song is exactly what I need, so I don’t feel so alone,” Schneiderman said.

“Music is a universal language that can connect a group of people with a simple lyric,” Annie Gorski, a senior psychology major, said.

Gorski said that whenever she is going through a difficult situation or her mental health is struggling, music has never failed to lift her spirits.

“Music reminds me that I’m not the only one who goes through hard times or feels sad,” Gorski said about music being the reason she gets through her struggles.

Gorski said that the best thing about music is that it helps you express the words you can’t find.

“Music helps me find the words to express how I feel when I can’t find them myself. There’s nothing like it!” Gorski said.

DeShawn Price, freshman psychology, said that music helps him in every department of his life.

“Music motivates me to focus on my school work,” Price said about music helping him focus on his studies.

“Music helps someone strive to be the best that they can be,” Price said.

Price said that music helps your mind focus on things that truly matter in certain situation you cannot handle, music helps calm you down.

Music can help a person in every aspect of their life. If you are feeling down or struggling with mental health, music is the best option, it will help you focus, and train your mind to be calm and focus on things that matter.
