The Lady Cavs of the basketball court entered the season with a determination to start strong. They did just that with a season-opening win over Washington & Lee University by a score of 50-34 on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Cabrini jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game, holding the Generals off the board for that time with a strong defensive game. That defense allowed the Cavaliers to pull ahead to a 22-4 lead which held up going into halftime. The Lady Cavs led at the break 29-11.

The second half remained the same for the Lady Cavs, as strong defense paced their play. As a team, the Lady Cavs forced 18 turnovers, blocked eight shots and recorded six steals. They also held the Generals to just 25 percent shooting for the game.

Despite shooting just 28 percent for the game themselves, the Lady Cavs had plenty of offense from the entire lineup. Three Lady Cavs finished in double figures in points. Junior Brittany Sandone led the way with 14 points. She also added two rebounds and one assist. Junior Colleen Stewart recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Megan Decker added 11 points and finished just one board shy of a double-double with nine.

The win marked the first time the Lady Cavs won their season opener since 2007-08, a season that resulted in a CSAC championship for Cabrini.

The Lady Cavs advance to the Swarthmore College Tip-off Tournament Final on Sunday, Nov. 18. They will face the host school, Swarthmore, at 3:30 p.m.
