‘Employee of the Month’ fails to impress

If your thinking that ‘Employee of the Month’ is just another chick flick, think again. This movie, starring Dane Cook, Jessica Simpson and Dax Shepard, is a comedy with unfortunately, only mediocre comical relief.

Cook takes the role of Zack, a carefree box boy at mega warehouse Super Club. Shepard, his nemesis, plays Vince, Super Club’s top cashier and consistent employee of the month. Zack starts to give Vince a run for his money at keeping the title when the attractive new cashier Amy (Simpson) joins the crew at Super Club and has a reputation for only dating the employee of the month.

Zack and Vince battle one another the entire movie, vying to become Amy’s new love interest. The constant banter between the two actors is entertaining, but there comes a downfall with Simpson, who has only acted in one other movie previously. The blank expression that is displayed on her face for almost the whole movie is shameful and can barely be considered acting.

Even though Cook is a great standup comedian, he could not show his full potential in a movie that is obviously routine.

Debby Speckman, a freshman at Millersville University, said, “I really liked Dane Cook, and I thought the movie was funny”.

The Philadelphia Inquirer, however, stated of Cook, “he needs a script, and Employee of the Month gives him only minimum wage humor.”

If you do decide to watch ‘Employee’, there is an upside. Both guys and girls can enjoy it, due to the quick wit of the hilarious Dane Cook, and the small role of Lon, played by Andy Dick who adds to Cook’s comical demeanor.
