Dr. Susan Helenski on the Mathematics Department

Susan Helenski has been teaching here for three total semesters starting back in August of 2018. Helenski is a professor of the mathematics department and was offered the job to teach by the head of the department, Dr. John Brown.

In her short time here she has noticed the family-like atmosphere here shared by all. “The students that I’ve had so far have been nothing but friendly towards me and their fellow classmates,” Helenski said. “There are many students who are very helpful in making sure anyone that might be struggling can be helped out.”

Helenski also emphasized the ownership that students here have. When they are wrong they can accept that and learn to do better. For instance, on a test or a quiz Helenski’s students understand how fair of a grader and teacher she is. The will to learn and always improve plays a critical part in taking Helenski for a course.

This is not Helenski’s first go-around with an educational vocation. She has taught for nearly 30 years. Ever since she graduated from the University of Delaware it has been her passion to teach. For the majority of her work experience, she taught high school mathematics which shows Helenski is capable of teaching in different environments.

While there is a fair amount of homework Helenski gives out it is to help practice for upcoming quizzes and tests. Helenski has always believed in this and as long as the homework is completed in a timely manner the grade in her class will be positive.

Brandon Loner, a sophomore in Helenski’s probability course, has only positive thoughts to share based on his experience thus far. “I appreciate how she shows multiple ways to solve any math problem,” Loner said. “It makes things a lot easier and gives me easier options to solve the problem. Loner emphasized how easy the course will be as long he and others pay attention. Although mathematics has always come easy to Looney he understands the work ethic you must have to achieve a good grade in the course.

Helenski always has a positive outlook on her students and the course she is teaching. She believes the curriculum that has been assigned to her is valuable and useful information for those taking math-related courses.

Helenski seems to be fully energized and takes pride in making sure her students can master the concept of whatever it is she is teaching. “The only difficult part of the job is the technology,” Helenski said.

Making sure that the lesson plan for the course is up and ready to go is a key component to her class. Although it is a rare case, when there are technical difficulties it becomes more of a challenge to teach the problem for everyone to see in a timely manner.
