Domestic Violence 101

November 5, 2012

Two Mondays during the semester, the Cabrini College Office of Health and Education hosts what they call the Live and Learn Series. The Live and Learn Series is part of the Healthy Monday program, which is a prompt to help sustain healthy behaviors, intentions, actions and initiatives.

On Nov. 5, 2012 at noon, “Dating and Relationships 101” was presented in the Mansion Dining Room by Danielle Jones. Also present was Chris Hyson, director of health and wellness education. The purpose of this discussion was to educate the audience on why people date and be in relationships, healthy behaviors, strong communication skills and more.

At this presentation two students were in attendance throughout the hour.

The skills and techniques Jones spoke about will be ones that can help you throughout life, not just your college years or in a relationship. Healthy communication skills and behaviors are crucial to have and can be used with your spouse, in the workplace or with family and friends.

“These are good skills throughout the lifespan,” Hyson said. “These are all some things you can use In friendships and work relationships.”

The topic of dating, relationships and domestic violence has been prevalent within Cabrini’s campus community recently. Cabrini has had a domestic violence speaker come to campus, as well as a story featured in one of our previous issues on the topic of domestic violence. Today, 43 percent of college women experience some form of violence and abusive dating behaviors (www.loveisrespect.org). This would have been great for students, both male and female, to attend this event to educate themselves on how to keep healthy and safe relationships.

Jones provided information about domestic violence for both genders, not just female. She provided a list, strictly geared towards males, about how they can help to prevent domestic violence.

This is the last Health Monday presentation of the semester, but there will be more to come next semester! In the mean time, there will be plenty of events hosted by the Health and Wellness office every Monday for the remainder of the semester.
