The so-called “real world” is around the corner. For most students, the everyday nine to five responsibilities of working for a living is a chilling thought.
“Set your goals first,” assistant director of the cooperative education and career services, Kristie Conway Beucler said. According to Beucler, students who are well prepared and know what they want when searching for jobs, in tern get the better jobs.
Both Beucler, and the director of the cooperative education and career services, Nancy Hutchison, agree that overall it is most important to meet as many people as possible in your field of interest. “By getting your name and face out there, you are making people in different fields familiar with you. This turns you into more than just a name on a list,” Beucler said.
According to Hutchison, the growing popularity of Internet job hunting has still not surpassed its predecessor, newspaper classifieds. Newspaper ads are still very popular among students.
Other than classifieds and the Internet, ” Job fairs are definitely worth while, and they are usually free, “Hutchison said. On Tuesday, March 25, five local colleges are sponsoring the Intercollegiate Career Fair at Eastern University. The fair runs from 12 p.m. to three p.m. in the university gymnasium. And will accommodate more than 60 employers.
“Begin your job search as early as possible. It is also very, and meet as many people as possible, remember, who you know can really help,” Beucler said.
