Big news for the city of brotherly love. Tim Tebow is the most recent signing of the Philadelphia Eagles. Tebow signed a one-year deal on Monday afternoon.

Tebow-mania is coming to Philly. Well, sort of, kind of, not really.

Tebow has no guarantee to make the final 53-man roster. He will have to prove that he can make NFL throws consistently. Even if Tebow can prove that it is unlikely, he will be higher than the third string quarterback on the roster, barring injuries.

Tebow’s biggest competition to earn a spot on the team will be third year quarterback Matt Barkley. Barkley was drafted in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL draft out of USC. He has been used sparingly since being drafted, appearing in only four games. He has not looked too impressive although it is only a small sample size.

With the signing of Tebow, the Eagles now has three of the five worst quarterbacks in total quarterback rating with a minimum of 30 games at the position in the last five years. The other two are none other than Mark Sanchez and newly required Sam Bradford. Bradford is expected to be the starter.

Tebow has not played a single snap in a regular season game since the 2012-2013 NFL season. Two off-seasons ago, Tebow was given the opportunity to try out for the New England Patriots. He was eventually released as expected.

The Patriots’ situation then and the Eagles’ situation now are a lot different. For starters, the Eagles certainly do not have anything close to a Tom Brady under center. Secondly, the Eagles run an offense more suited for Mr. Tebow. The birds run a read-option offense that Tebow ran in high school, college and early on in his pro career with the Broncos.

Tebow won a Heisman trophy and two national championships with the Florida Gators. Maybe this signing works out for Tebow and the Eagles both, but most likely, Tebow will make little to no impact for the Eagles next season.
