Cabrini alumnus Brian Sugden now works as the assistant Sports Information Director for Cabrini athletics.

Brian Sugden is the man behind the scenes.

Sugden, assistant sports information director, covers the school’s games and athletic events for the athletic department’s website. Sugden works very closely with Dave Howell, the director of sports information, as his assistant.

He attended Cabrini, studied communication, ran cross country and was involved in the school’s lacrosse club, prior to his graduation in 2013. He met Howell at his job as a front desk staff member while still attending college, contacted the director after graduation and eventually got the position, only two months later.

“One day I helped him actually do stats because his assistant wasn’t there,” Sugden said. “I cover a bunch of different sports. Softball is coming up so that is going to be one of my teams.”

“When he covers these events, he writes the pregame and postgame stories, as well as “the game day stats so when you’re online and you’re clicking the live stats feed, that is me,” Sugden said.

He is also the voice behind the sports weekend video reviews and is grateful for all the skills he has learned in video production from Cathy Yungmann, when he was involved in LOQation in college.

During the current basketball season, Sugden sits with Howell on the sidelines and is the “play-by-play guy.”

“I’ll call out what I see and then he’ll enter it in the computer. It is a two-man job,” Sugden said.

On top of the stories that he writes, he covers softball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, as well as swimming. After his work, Howell oversees what has been done, approves it, then Sugden sends it out. Sugden is also responsible for conatcting other colleges sports infromation directors.

When Sugden is not dedicating time to the athletic department in his part time position, he is busy as a building supervisor as another part time job at the school. Here he looks after the front desk staff, the lifeguards, the fitness center staff as well as opening and closing the building, along with three other building supervisors. Aside from these two positions, he also had another part time job in catering, prior to his two and a half years while working at the college.

On a daily basis, he never knows exactly what exciting new things his job will offer. “Today, I came in and wrote the swimming preview since the swim team is going to compete in the NCAA championship,” Sugden said. “Then,  I posted another story that Brian Beacham created about the alumni cross country event that is going to be held on May 17,” Sugden said.

Something interesting about Sugden is that he would not be here if it were not for his parents.

“They met here and my dad helped start the men’s basketball team.  He was the first guy’s class for Cabrini.”

When he is not busy with his two other jobs, he enjoys little known Netflix movies and Chipotle.
